"We understand that hemp is a powerful plant that can produce environmentally conscious products that benefit the planet, our bodies and our pets."
Where did you grow up?
We grew up in Okemos, MI a suburb of Lansing, MI. We currently live back in the area and have our CBD laboratory in Lansing, MI.
Tell us about your vision, or mission. What’s ahead for you and/or your career?
Our mission is to provide the world with holistically minded and sustainable products. Along with our CBD product line at Blooming Botanicals, we strive to continue and grow our education and outreach to our clients and beyond. We are looking forward to a new year of many events and speaking engagements. In 2020 we are excited to roll out more unique herbally infused CBD products we have been beta testing at Blooming Botanicals that have received great feedback.
We love people who break the boundaries and relentlessly push toward their goals. That said, what drives you? Was there an event, or personal moment that triggered it all?
As a husband and wife team we have been entrepreneurs for ten years together. There are many ups and down that have serendipitously led to this path. Both of us had previously worked in holistic health, sustainable resource management and cannabis. We have always been risk-takers and worked in new and emerging industries. To say we have “failed” often is an understatement but we don’t look at it that way. We look at it as knowledge and building blocks for the next steps to success!
When hemp found itself coming out of federal prohibition in 2018 we knew it was a perfect mix of our backgrounds and we had something unique to bring to the industry. So naturally we jumped right in full force. What drives us is to live a lifestyle that we believe in as a couple and to support products and industries that we intrinsically feel are good for not just our clients but the world in general. There are a lot of challenges in new industries but overcoming them just becomes more rewarding.
Have you been rejected along the way? How did you feel? How did you overcome it?
Part of being entrepreneurs is facing rejection with no remorse. We had been down a road with investors putting together a licensed marijuana facility years ago. When the state then delayed their licensing time frame, sending the investors looking for new opportunities. It was disappointing at the time, but we were able to maintain our drive and pivot to something that turned out to be even better. As everything was settling down, hemp started to have a resurgence a few years ago so we participated in that. Fast forward to the federal ban being lifted and we were already up and running.
To this day we still have to face things that work and those that don’t. You truly have to believe in yourself and live with integrity. If you are building honestly you have to trust the path. Know that things are not going to end like you picture them, but trust in the process that gets your there. Also, don’t forget to have fun along the way, find outlets that let you unwind, especially as a couple. We love traveling and live music, it brings us together with amazing friends in amazing places.
If you could offer a piece of wisdom/advice to someone who is ready to break their own boundaries, what would you tell them?
Don’t wait for it to be perfect. So often opportunities are wasted trying to perfect things before they start. Whether it’s a business idea or a personal hobby. It’s always better to just get going and let it get refined in the processes. The beginning is daunting and will be like that forever, so you might as well get that part over with. Time flies no matter what. It’s fun looking back at accomplishments and growth rather than ideas you had.
What mantra do you would want the world to remember you by?
“Make waves.” This is something we wrote down and put on our refrigerator when we lived in Costa Rica. It was a daily reminder that you can start or build on something every day that can affect others.
What does it mean to you to be fueled by choice?
Being fueled by choice to us means choosing our own path. As a couple that owns a business together, we face all the hardships together too. Yet we get to relish in our successes and we are grateful to have a life of passion together. Between all the travel and unique things we have experienced together it’s hard to imagine it any other way. It’s also exciting not knowing what the future holds.
